The abortion pill process will look different for every woman, but there will be similarities. For one, every woman will experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding because this is how the process works.
However, the level of pain, the amount of bleeding, the side effects experienced, and any risks or complications can vary based on each woman.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The abortion pill (another name for medical abortion) is a two-drug process using mifepristone followed by misoprostol.
The first drug, mifepristone, will block progesterone to end the pregnancy. Then, about 24-48 hours later, a woman will take misoprostol, which will trigger the uterus to contract and cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.
At the end of the procedure, the uterus should be fully empty and not have any tissue left inside it. If anything is left behind, it can lead to a serious infection, so it’s critical to make sure you visit a medical professional after the procedure to ensure you aren’t experiencing an incomplete abortion.
What Can I Expect Beyond Cramping and Bleeding?
In addition to cramping and vaginal bleeding, these drugs can also come with side effects such as upset stomach, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, chills, and headache. You could experience all, some, or none of these while taking these drugs.
Additionally, your healthcare provider should tell you the level of pain and bleeding to expect. Some women report intense pain, while others may not have the same experience. Your provider may prescribe pain medication, or you could be advised to take over-the-counter painkillers.
It can take days for the abortion pill process to be completely done, and you may experience bleeding and cramps for about two weeks afterward.
Make sure to monitor your symptoms and report anything concerning to a healthcare professional.
If you experience heavy bleeding, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, chills, body aches, fast heart rate, bad pain in the pelvis or stomach area, or a fever that lasts more than four hours or starts in the days after misoprostol, seek medical care immediately. These could be warning signs of a complication.
