The abortion pill is a combination of two drugs used to end an early pregnancy and expel it from the body. It’s the common name for a medical abortion, and it’s FDA-approved for use within the first ten weeks of pregnancy.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The two drugs primarily used in a medical abortion are mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone is the first drug, and it blocks the hormone progesterone in a woman’s body.
Hours or days later, a woman takes misoprostol. This drug will trigger the uterus to contract, causing abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding to expel the pregnancy and related tissue from the body. The whole process typically takes days.
A woman should follow up with a healthcare provider a week later to ensure her uterus is empty and the abortion is complete.
Putting Your Health and Safety First
Before taking the abortion pill, you should understand the potential side effects and risks. There are also certain conditions that could make the abortion pill unsafe for some women.
The abortion may not be advised for women who take certain medications, such as blood thinners, or have certain health conditions, disorders, or allergies. Also, if a woman has an IUD currently in place, she must get it removed before taking the abortion pill.
It’s imperative for a woman to evaluate her health history before starting the abortion pill.
Also, getting an ultrasound scan is advised to understand how far along they are (gestational age) and ensure they are within the FDA-approved 10-week window. They will also want to know whether or not they have miscarried or could have an ectopic pregnancy.
